Celebrating the Joy of Pets

A month to celebrate the joy pets bring to people’s lives and promote responsible pet ownership, May is National Pet Month. Whether you are a current pet owner, a hopeful pet owner or unsure if pet ownership is for you, it’s a great time to learn about the benefits and responsibilities that come along with having an animal companion in your life.

Pets bring immense joy to our daily lives with their unwavering affection and dedication, and should be celebrated often!
Undoubtedly, there is a unique bond between humans and animals. Whether you are fully engulfed in that amazing bond or have yet to experience it, owning a pet can prove to be a highly positive and rewarding experience. For humans, pets offer unwavering companionship, help improve mental health and reduce stress, provide assistance to individuals with disabilities and add an immense amount of laughter and smiles to your everyday life

Daily snuggles are one of the best ways to show your pet the love they deserve!
“Pets help you relax,” explains Paws ‘N Claws owner Eli Campbell. “They bring joy and help you unwind after a hard day at work or school, whatever it may be. Just petting your dog or cat will help lower your blood pressure. Pets also provide an obligatory outlet away from the daily rigors of life. Just the sheer fact that your dog needs a walk forces you to do something and think about something other than whatever the stresses of the day may be.”
Another interesting benefit to pet ownership is the added protection from developing allergies. Research has shown that exposure to the most common pets – dogs and cats – can lower the risk of developing allergic sensitization in children and young adults. Of course there is individual variability depending on genetics and allergic severity, but for many people, more frequent exposure can help to train the immune system. Paws ‘n Claws co-owner Erin Campbell adds, “People are more prone to allergies as they age, and those that do not grow up around pets may suffer from more allergies if they are less exposed.”

Fun new toys can mean so much to your pet and provide them with the daily stimulation they need!
A unique bond that is certainly one to be celebrated, pet ownership is also something that needs to be taken seriously. Owning a pet means providing them with the proper care, nutrition, daily exercise and veterinary attention. “Pets are not inexpensive,” says Eli. “Pets can also be demanding – some dogs and cats more so than others – and that needs to be taken into consideration before adding a pet into your life.”
National Pet Month is also a time to support animal welfare organizations with either monetary donations or volunteer hours, promote pet adoption to offer a second chance for a companion animal in need and recognize the invaluable support service and therapy animals provide. It’s also a time to show your pet how much you care. Spreading the love to your pet can come in many forms like daily snuggles, walks and adventures together, but it can also come in the form of special treats.

The Woof Pupsicle is an awesome treat and toy to show your furry friend how special they are!
“From doggie ice cream to a large selection of chews and treats to life jackets that keep them safe and water toys that keep them entertained, we offer a fun variety of treats, toys and gear to spread the love,” says Erin. “We also provide unique seasonal selections around times like Christmas and Easter that give pet owners an opportunity to buy their pet a new toy or treat. At the moment, the Woof Pupsicle is hugely popular and overall, an awesome dog toy and treat combined.”

Extra special and seasonal treats are a great way to show your pet how much you care!
A time to celebrate the joy of pets while also promoting responsible pet ownership, May is a wonderful month to spread a little extra love to our furry companions. As Eli and Erin at Paws ‘n Claws remind us, owning a pet can be one of the most rewarding experiences in your life – and one to not take lightly, but also one to celebrate daily. Happy National Pet Month!
